Robitaille, Gustave

ROBITAILLE, Gustave (1892-1968), the younger brother of Ludger Robitaille, was active in Quebec City and his early education and training closely parallels that of his brother. Born in Quebec City, P.Q. on 18 November 1892, he was educated at the Seminary de Quebec, and studied land surveying at the Laval University in 1912-13. He followed his brother to Montreal, where he too studied at the Ecole Polytechnique from 1914 to 1918. After his return to Quebec City, he trained in his brother’s office, and was in partnership with him from 1919 to 1921 (see list of works under Robitaille & Robitaille). He then practised on his own in 1923-24, but only a few works by him have been located. In February 1925 he accepted the appointment of building inspector with the City of Quebec Buildings Dept., and in 1938 he was appointed City Architect, to replace J.L. Pinsonnault, former City Architect who had died in April 1938. Robitaille continued to work until after 1960, and resigned from the P.Q.A.A. in 1965. He died in Quebec City on 1 August 1968 (biog. Canadian Engineer [Montreal], lxxxix, 31 May 1938, 18; inf. Province of Quebec Assoc. of Architects).
