Taft, Flewelling William

TAFT, Flewelling William (1847-1917), son of Andrew B. Taft of Montreal, Que., was born in New York City on 25 January 1848 and likely trained under his father. He was listed as having an independent practise as an architect at 60 Fortier Street in Montreal in 1883-84. After the death of his father in June 1885 he continued to work as architect, but by 1900 he was listed as a stage manager, and obituary articles on Taft published in 1917 refer to his activity as “an architect by profession” who was also a stage carpenter and mechanical chief at various theatres, usually with the Sparrow enterprise. Only a few works by F.W. Taft have been found. He died in Montreal on 23 December 1917 (obituary The Gazette [Montreal], 24 Dec. 1917, 7; death notice Montreal Star, 24 Dec. 1917, 17).
