Fawcett, Walter Lyell

FAWCETT, Walter Lyell (1896-1976), son of Robert William Fawcett, was born at Forest, Ont. on 16 January 1896 and studied architecture at the University of Toronto from 1921 to 1925 and graduated there in 1925. In May 1925 he moved to Detroit and articled with the leading firm of Smith, Hinchman & Grylls in 1925-28. He then joined the architectural department of Detroit Edison Co. and continued to work there until March 1932, and returned to Sarnia to practise. One of his commissions from this period was that of Sarnia Arena, built in 1932. In 1936 he was appointed junior architect in the Chief Architect’s Branch of the federal Dept. of Public Works in Ottawa (C.R., Vol. L, 15 Jan. 1936, 43). Fawcett resigned from the Ontario Assoc. of Architects in January 1962 and later died in Victoria, B.C. on 23 April 1976 (inf. Ontario Association of Architects, Toronto).
