Stuart, Bertram Dudley

STUART, Bertram Dudley (1885-1977), active in Vancouver, B.C. from 1910 to 1915, in partnership with Howard E. White, and later under his own name. Born in Epsom, Co. Surrey, England on 4 July 1885, he arrived in Vancouver in late 1910 or early 1911, collaborating with White on several commercial and institutional commissions. His best known work in Vancouver was the Forestry Pavilion on the site of the Hastings Park Exhibition Grounds (1913). Erected to promote the wood products industry of British Columbia, this substantial three stony symmetrical pavilion was ringed with columns composed of raw logs which were still clad in their original bark, imparting a remarkably rustic appearance to this large exhibit building. Stuart left Vancouver in late 1915 and moved to Seattle where he continued to work alone or in partnership with Arthur Wheatley (in 1925-30), and later with Robert Durham (in 1941 to 1977). His best-known works there include the Mayflower Hotel (1926), the Marlborough Apartments (1926-27), and Exeter House Apartments (1927). Stuart retired in 1971 and died in Seattle in October 1977 (biog. J.K. Ochsner, Shaping Seattle Architecture, 2014, 478-79; D.
