Story, Herbert

STORY, Herbert (1865-1952), of Edmonton, Alta. served as Architect to the School Trustees of the City of Edmonton from 1912 to 1936, and during his tenure he controlled the design of virtually every school building erected in Edmonton for a period of nearly twenty-five years. Born in Carlisle, England, he articled with George D. Oliver, a local architect there, from 1884 to 1888. He then moved to London to work as assistant to Frank Matcham, a leading theatre architect (1888), and the following year joined the Architect’s Department of the London School Board and spent five years gaining experience in the design of modern school buildings in London. In 1894 he moved to Birkenhead and opened his own office, in partnership with a “Mr. Hulme” and practised there until 1910. Story emigrated to Canada in 1912 and soon after arriving in Edmonton, Alta. he obtained a position with the Edmonton School Board, rising to the post of Board Architect and Building Commissioner. He was a proponent of the Tudor Gothic style, best seen in his design for the Frank Scott School (1923-24), the largest school building erected in Edmonton at that time. Story retired from the profession in 1936, and died in Edmonton on 31 March 1952 (obit. and port. Edmonton Journal, 3 April 1952, 11; R.A.I.C. Journal, xxix, May 1952, 158; biog.
