Story, George D.

STORY, George D. (1832-1916), an architect who lived and worked in Newport, Vermont, USA. With his office situated in the town at the south end of Lake Memphremagog, just five miles from the Quebec border, it is likely that Story solicited work from Canadian clients, and five of his commissions have been located in the Eastern Townships of Quebec. He was already active in a partnership of Story & Spear, Architects, c. 1884-86, and he practised under his own name in Newport from c. 1888 until 1910. His name appears in the Vermont State listings of architects published in The Architects’ Directory [New York], pub. by William T. Comstock, in the editions of 1895, 1904-05, 1907 and 1909. In Canada, he can be linked to buildings in Mansonville, in Knowlton, in Sherbrooke, in Lennoxville, and in Stanstead. No information has been found on his activity after 1910 (inf. William R. Cutter, New England Families - Genealogical and Memorial, 1916, ii, 857). Story was born at Manchester-by-the-Sea, Mass. on 22 September 1832 and died at Waterbury, Vermont on 29 August 1916 at the age of 82 years (obituary Orleans County Monitor [Barton, Vermont], 6 Sept. 1916, 7). He was later buried at Beebe, Quebec.
