Stokes, Ernest Victor

STOKES, Ernest Victor (1886-1951) was active in Toronto where he worked as assistant to Arthur R. Denison (later Denison & Stephenson) from 1908 to 1924. Born in Cannock, Co. Staffordshire,England on 14 August 1886, he studied at the Science & Art Institute at Walsall, England, and trained in the office of Hickton & Farmer, a local firm of architects in that city, from 1903 to December 1907. He emigrated to Canada in 1908 and that same year joined the office of A.R. Denison in Toronto. When Denison died in June 1924, Stokes took over his practise and continued to work under his own name until September 1929, then joined the office of Mackenzie Waters in Toronto. No references have been found to his work after 1931. He returned to England after this date, and died at Brewood, Co. Staffordshire on 7 March 1951 (inf. Ontario Assoc. of Architects).
