Stewart, Neil McMartin

STEWART, Neil McMartin (c. 1902 - 1972) was active in Fredericton, N.B. where he maintained an office for more than twenty years. Born in Alberta, he studied architecture at McGill University and was nominated as an associate member of the Royal Inst. of British Architects of London, England in 1929 (R.A.I.C. Journal, vi, Aug. 1929, xxviii). He worked in Montreal in several architectural offices, and after serving with the Royal Canadian Navy during WWII, he moved to New Brunswick and opened an office in Fredericton, N.B. He later formed a partnership there with Lynn Howell, as Stewart & Howell. One of his best know works was the classic modernist design for the Beaverbrook Art Gallery, Queen Street at St. John Street, FREDERICTON, N.B., 1958-59 (R.A.I.C. Journal, xxxvii, April 1960, 156-7, illus.; John Leroux, Building New Brunswick: An Architectural History, 2008, 196-97, illus. & descrip.). His other works included the Airport Terminal Building at Fredericton (1965), the Student Centre at the Univ. of New Brunswick (1953), and The Lodge, and the Administration Building, both at Mactaquac Park (1967-69).
Stewart was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Architectural Inst. of Canada in 1960, and later held the post of Registrar of the College of Fellows of the R.A.I.C. He died in Fredericton on 12 November 1972 (obit. Daily Gleaner [Fredericton], 13 Nov. 1972; Atlantic Advocate, Jan. 1973, 28). The Provincial Archives of New Brunswick at Fredericton holds an extensive collection of drawings by Stewart for projects dating from 1948 to 1970 (PANB Acc. MC 154).
