Stephenson, George Ellsworth

STEPHENSON, George Ellsworth (1874- 1946), active in Toronto, Ont. where he was in partnership with Arthur R. Denison from June 1906 until late 1921 (see list of works under Denison & Stephenson). Born in Halton County, Ont. on 4 June 1874, he articled with the Toronto firm of Denison & Fellowes (1894-96) and then spent nearly a decade working as a draftsman and assistant in the office of A.R. Denison & Co. He joined the Ontario Association of Architects in May 1905, but only one commission by Stephenson has be identified from this period, that for a large residence for J.M. Wilson, Langley Avenue near Broadview Avenue, TORONTO, ONT. 1906 (City of Toronto b.p. 5396, 29 Sept. 1906). In 1906 he was invited by his mentor A.R. Denison to form a partnership, and the firm specialized in designing warehouses, banks, residences and hospital buildings in the Toronto area. Their partnership was dissolved by mutual consent in December 1921, and Stephenson opened an office in Toronto under his own name (Const., xv, Jan. 1922, 34), but no information has been found on his works after this period. He died in Toronto on 27 December 1946 (death notice Globe & Mail [Toronto], 30 Dec. 1946, 22; inf. Ontario Assoc. of Architects).
