Steacy, John Graham Jr.

STEACY, John Graham Jr. (1837-1914), son of the Brockville, Ont. architect John G. Steacy Sr., was born at Elizabethtown, Ont. on 19 March 1837. He was associated with his father in the design and construction of the Grand Trunk Railway stations and engine sheds at Brockville and Prescott, and served as contractor and builder for the East Ward Market House (later Victoria Hall) in Brockville. He was also noted as the ’architect & builder’ of the sugar refinery complex at Portland, Maine, USA, for the Hon. J.B. Brown. He gained a reputation as a successful railway contractor, overseeing the construction of the first 50 miles of track for the European & North American Railway westward from Saint John, New Brunswick. He later served a contractor for portions of the Williamsburg Bridge in New York City, as well as supervising the construction of parts of the New Croton Aqueduct providing water to New York City. Steacy Jr. died at the family residence in Brockville on 14 May 1914 (obit. and biog. Brockville Times, 8 May 1914, 1; Brockville Recorder, 15 May 1914, 8).
