Kieswetter, Thomas

KIESWETTER, Thomas (1851-1891) of Collingwood, Ont. was first noted as a 'Practical architect, Builder and Joiner' in 1882 (Enterprise & Collingwood Messenger, 20 July 1882, 1, advert.). In 1885 he described himself only as a 'Civil Engineer and Draughstman' with an office at Peterman's Sash & Door Factory (Enterprise & Collingwood Messenger, 19 March 1885, 1, advert.). By April 1886 his business card had re-appeared again offering his services as an 'Architect & Arbitrator' (Enterprise & Collingwood Messenger, 15 April 1886, 2). He designed several private houses in the Queen Anne style but his most distinctive work is an elaborate and picturesque High Victorian facade for the Masonic Temple in Collingwood. He also prepared an ambitious plan for the Exhibition Buildings at Stayner, Ont., but the scheme proved too costly and the commission was later given to Kennedy & Holland[Enterprise [Collingwood], 1 April 1886, 3, descrip.). No references to his work can be found after 1890. He died in Collingwood on 19 May 1891.
