Saint-Jean, Casimir

SAINT-JEAN, Casmir (1864-1918) was active in Montreal, Que. where he opened an office in 1888 and continued to practise architecture until after 1913. Born and raised in St. Camille, Que., he came to Montreal about 1874, and trained under the Lapointe Brothers (Francois & D.A. Lapointe), and with Victor Roy. He devoted much of his career to the design of churches, convents, schools and institutional buildings for the Roman Catholic diocese in Montreal and in the nearby counties of Rouville, Bagot, Terrebone, and Iberville in southern Quebec. A biography and list of works by Saint-Jean appeared in the large promotional business book called Montreal Illustrated, 1894, 282, and notes that “...Mr. St. Jean has been established in business in this city a period of five years and is not only prominently known, but has the reputation of being one of the most reliable and accomplished members of his profession in the Dominion”.

In 1912 he won the competition to rebuild St. Jean Baptiste Roman Catholic Church in Montreal, originally built in 1901-03 and designed by J. Emile Vanier, and destroyed by fire in June 1911. Saint-Jean died in Montreal on 4 July 1918 at the age of 53 years. His obituary in Le Devoir notes that “…he constructed or repaired forty churches” during his career. (obit. and port. La Presse [Montreal], 5 July 1918, 15; Le Devoir [Montreal], 5 July 1918, 3; biog. and list of works in Montreal Illustrated, 1894, 282). His son Eugene Saint-Jean was his successor and continued the work of his office.
