Lindsay, Peter White

LINDSAY, Peter White (1886-1953) was active in Toronto where he gained a reputation as a talented draftsman and delineator and, for a brief period, as an architect who practiced under his own name in partnership with A. Mackenzie Brydon, and with John W.D. Greig. Born in Prestopans, Scotland on 13 May 1886, he studied at George Heriot College in Edinburgh, then emigrated to Canada in 1905 or 1906. He obtained a position as draftsman and designer with Darling & Pearson, the leading architectural firm in Toronto, and was employed there from 1906 to 1908. He then joined John M. Lyle, another talented Toronto architect, and assisted in his office in 1908-10. In late 1910 and 1911 he was employed by George M. Miller of Toronto, then moved to Wisconsin where he spent one year as staff member with The Church Finishing Co. of Fond du Lac, Wisc., designing ecclesiastical fittings and fixtures. He appears to have returned to Toronto in early 1912, forming a partnership with A.M. Brydon, another young architect from Edinburgh. Within a few months, they were joined by J.W.D. Greig. Their collaboration was successful but brief; by late 1916 the firm had dissolved and no trace of Lindsay can be found until 1928 when his name appears once again, this time as a draftsman in the office of Darling & Pearson, where he remained until 1931. He later worked as a staff architect for Mathers & Haldenby (in 1937-38) and for Harkness & Hertzberg (in 1941-42). He may have abandoned the profession after this date, and no information on his career or works can be found after 1946. Lindsay died at Weston, Ont. on 28 April 1953 (death notice Globe & Mail [Toronto], 29 April 1953, 23; inf. Ontario Assoc. of Architects)
