Law, Alexander

LAW, Alexander (1874-1956), active in North Vancouver, B.C. as an architect and builder. In 1909 he formed an architectural partnership with William Knowles, when it was noted that "...both gentlemen are practitioners of a broad experience and they have a large amount of work in prospect" (Const. [Toronto], ii, June 1909, 70). Law was born in Edinburgh, Scotland on 18 September 1874 and studied architecture at Heriot Watt College. He worked as an assistant to James Macrae in Edinburgh in 1900-04, and emigrated to Canada in 1905, settling first in Toronto in 1905-07, and then moving to Vancouver in 1907. Many of his residential and commercial projects in North Vancouver still stand. In 1909 he formed a new partnership with William Knowles, as Law & Knowles, Architects and Builders (The Express (North Vancouver), 7 May 1909, 1). The City of North Vancouver holds records of buildings permits granted to Law in the period of 1911 to 1913, as well as a hand-written memoir by Law (NVMA 86-24). Law moved to San Pedro, Calif. in 1920, and relocated to Oak Glen, Calif. in 1929. He died at Oak Glen in 1956 (biog. and list of works in The Express (North Vancouver), 17 April 1908, 1; biog. D.
