Leighton, John William

LEIGHTON, John William (1894-1962) was born in Windsor, Ont. on 22 September 1894 and served an apprenticeship under Crane & Pennington (in 1910-12), and then worked as a draftsman for J.C. Pennington from 1912 to 1915. He went overseas in November 1915 and served with the 48th Highlanders during WW1, and returned to Canada in April 1919, then moved to Philadelphia where he studied architecture at the Univ. of Pennsylvania in 1919-21. After graduating, he rejoined Pennington in his new firm called Pennington & Boyde, and served as associate for two large commissions by the firm in London and in Windsor. Leighton remained with that office until 1932, then joined Sheppard & Masson to assist with the design and construction of the Federal Building, Windsor, 1932-33. He moved to London, Ont. in August 1934 to join O. Roy Moore, and continued to work in the Moore office until after 1950. Leighton died in London on 12 November 1962 (obit.
