Kennedy, Donald

KENNEDY, Donald (1804-1888) was active in Bytown (now Ottawa), Ont. in January 1838 where he advertised that he had 'commenced the Cabinet business'. He is likely the same 'D. Kennedy' who submitted an entry in the 1839 competition for the Court House & Gaol in Ottawa (Gazette [Montreal], 17 Sept. 1839, 3). His entry was not premiated, and John Ostell was declared winner. He was active as surveyor in 1842-43 and prepared a plan of Bytown in 1842 and a map of the Dalhousie District in 1843, both of which can be found in the cartographic collection of the National Archives of Canada. By 1851 he was practising in Aylmer, Que. (Canada Directory, 1851, 20) and there designed the first County Court House, now used as the municipal library. Kennedy died in Nepean Township, Ont. in 1888.
