GAGNIER, Gaston (1905-1982), active in Montreal, at first in a brief partnership with J.Z. Gauthier and later under his own name from 1933 to 1946. He then formed a new partnership with Gerard Derome and Henri Mercier. Born in Montreal, Que. on 22 August 1905, he was educated at the Univ. of Ottawa, graduated from the local Ecole des Beaux Arts in Montreal in 1930, and worked briefly in the office of Viau & Venne before starting a partnership with Joseph Z. Gauthier in early 1931. Their collaboration was brief, and was dissolved within months after it had been formed (Const., xxiv, Oct. 1931, 332; R.A.I.C. Journal, viii, Nov. 1931, 403). Gagnier then joined the P.Q.A.A. in late 1931 and opened an office under his own name in Montreal. In 1946 he created the new firm of Gagnier, Derome and Mercier, Architects, but this too was later disbanded in 1950, and he continued to work under his own name until 1970. Gagnier died in Montreal on 13 July 1982 (death notice La Presse [Montreal], 14 July 1982, E6; biog. and port. National Reference Book, ix, 1951, 656-7)
