Fish, John

FISH, John (1903-1978), active in Montreal, Que. and partner in the firm of Ross Patterson Townsend & Fish from 1952 to 1960 (later renamed Ross Fish & Duchenes). Born in London, England on 1 November 1903 he was educated at the Central School of Arts & Crafts in 1919-23. After arriving in Canada in 1926 he settled in Montreal and joined Ross & MacDonald, the leading firm in that city, and worked as draftsman there from 1927 to 1933. He became a member of the Province of Quebec Assoc. of Architects in 1935 and the following year received Second Prize for his design of a contemporary house submitted in the Dominion Housing Act Small House Competition of 1936 (R.A.I.C. Journal, xiii, May 1936, 89-90, illus.). Fish maintained an office under his own name until after 1950 when he was invited by John K. Ross to join his new firm which had become the successors to the practise of Ross & MacDonald. Fish died in Montreal on 18 February 1978 (death notice Gazette [Montreal], 20 Feb. 1978, 32; inf.
