Kaminker, Benjamin

KAMINKER, Benjamin (1909-1997), active in Toronto, Ont. where he was born on 6 May 1909 and educated at the University of Toronto. After graduation in 1928 he formed a partnership with one of his classmates Edward I. Richmond in 1933 and continued to work with him until 1937. Kaminker then moved to Timmins, Ont. in 1938 and practised there under his own name until 1942 when he relocated to Ottawa, Ont. After returning to Toronto in 1946 he was invited by James Govan to become a member of the firm of Govan, Ferguson & Lindsay, and their new office, renamed Govan, Ferguson, Lindsay, Kaminker, Maw, Langley & Keenleyside, carried out commissions for hospitals in nearly every province in Canada in the period from 1948 to 1970. Kaminker died in Toronto on 12 February 1997 (death notice Globe & Mail [Toronto], 13 Feb. 1997, C 10; inf. Ontario Assoc. of Architects).
