Smith, Thomas

SMITH, Thomas (1776-1852), an early New Brunswick architect who began his career in Saint John, and moved to Fredericton before 1840. There he designed the York County Gaol, Brunswick Street, FREDERICTON, N.B.,, 1841-42 (G. MacBeath & E. Hubert, The York County Jail: A Brief Illustrated History, 2008). He is almost certainly the same 'Thomas Smith, Architect' who died in Fredericton on 16 December 1852, where he was apparently 'long and favourably known' (death notice New Brunswick Courier [Saint John], 18 Dec. 1852, 2; Morning News [Saint John[, 22 Dec. 1852, 2).
