Goodfellow, William D.B.

GOODFELLOW, William Douglas Bamford (1883-1958), was born in Shanghai, China on 29 September 1883 and was active in Vancouver from 1907 until 1914. He likely trained under his father William Goodfellow, an architect and builder in New Westminster. In 1908 William D. Goodfellow was recorded as the architect for the new 3 storey Knights of Pythias Hall in NEW WESTMINSTER, B.C. (Province [Vancouver], 15 Aug. 1908, 9, t.c.).

W.D.B. Goodfellow was in partnership in 1911 with Sholto Smith (see list of works under Smith & Goodfellow), and they practised in Vancouver until early February 1912 when their partnership was dissolved (Daily Building Record [Vancouver], 5 Feb. 1912, 1). Smith left Vancouver "...for an extended holiday", and Goodfellow continued the practice under his own name. In that year he designed a substantial residence for Dr. John W. Thomson, in Shaughnessy Heights, as well as several other private houses in the area of South Vancouver and Point Grey. In November 1914 he joined the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force and served in Europe, later receiving the Military Cross on 1 January 1918 as well as several other British war medals for 'gallant services'. After being discharged in March 1919 he returned to China to pursue his career, and was associated with (or employed by?) Atkinson & Dallas, Architects in Hankow, China. Goodfellow then left China (via Hong Kong) and moved to England in 1926, and later died at Surbiton, Co. Surrey, England on 11 February 1958 (inf. Gordon Fulton, Ottawa).
