Godfrey, William Frederick George

GODFREY, William Frederick George (1884-1971), served as a staff architect for the Canadian National Railways office in Toronto from 1921 until after 1931, and it may be possible to link his name with the design of several 'industrial and domestic' buildings for the Railway which he claimed credit for in application papers submitted in 1931. Born in London, England on 12 June 1884 he studied architecture at Northern Polytechnic School in London, and arrived in Canada before 1918. He was employed as a draftsman in the Ontario Dept. of Public Works (in 1918-20), then joined the Toronto office of Thomas Lamb in 1920. In September 1921 he was hired by the C.N.R. in Toronto and remained with them for more than a decade. He was also the Secretary and member of the Canadian Society of Graphic Arts, and received a Gold Medal at the B.C. Govt. International Exhibition at New Westminster in 1929 for his artwork. Godfrey died on 2 March 1971 (E. McMann, Royal Canadian Academy of Arts: Exhibitions & Members, 1981, 150; inf. Ontario Assoc. of Architects)
