Giroux, Alfred

GIROUX, Alfred (fl. 1877-1898), described as an architect and active in St. Casimir, Portneuf County, Quebec, where he prepared plans for the finishing of the interiors of several churches, as well as designs of at least two churches for the Roman Catholic diocese. He was the son of Raphael Giroux (1815-69) and likely received some training as an architect and sculptor from him. He may also have worked as contractor and woodworker, for he is almost certainly the same 'Mr. Giroux, architect of St. Casimir' who suffered a serious injury to his arm caused by an accident with a planing machine (Ottawa Free Press, 3 April 1891, 1). No biographical information has been found on Giroux, and his name is absent from listings for architects in Gerard Morisset, L'Architecture in Nouvelle-France, 1949.
