Gibson, Harold H.

GIBSON, Harold H. (fl. 1900-01), listed as 'architect, Willowdale, County of York', and possibly the first professional architect to live and work in the Township of North York (now part of Toronto). In 1900 he called for tenders for a pressed brick school house at CONCORD, VAUGHAN TOWNSHIP, YORK CO., ONT. (C.R., xi, 11 April 1900, 1). The following year he designed Elia Primitive Methodist Church, Finch Avenue West near Chesswood Drive, NORTH YORK, ONT., 1901; still standing in 2022 and now called The Reformed Hungarian Church. The original minute books for the church, now held at the United Church Archives in Toronto, state that Gibson was '..engaged as architect, and received $2.00 per day for the days he spent supervising the erection' of the building (United Church Archives, Elia United Church Centennial 1851-1951).
