Geekie, Stuart

GEEKIE, Stuart (1852-1921) was active in Dauphin, Manitoba as 'architect and manager of Shaw Bros. Lumber & Planing Mill' (Lovell's Directory of Manitoba and the North West Territories, 1900-01). Born in Scone, Perthshire, Scotland on 1 February 1852, he emigrated to Canada in 1882 and settled in southern Manitoba. In 1899 he was noted as "the architect" who prepared drawings and awarded contracts for the construction of St. James Presbyterian Church, DAUPHIN, MAN. (C.R., x, 2 Aug. 1899, 4; N. Bingham, A Study of Church Buildings in Manitoba, 1987, 95, illus.). In 1905 he designed the Town Hall, Police Office and Jail, 1st Avenue N.W., DAUPHIN, MAN. (Dauphin Press, 10 May 1905, 1; Parks Canada, Town Halls of Canada, 1987, 304, 306 ff., illus.; Manitoba, Dauphin: An Architectural Walking Tour, 1988, Building No. 4, illus.). Geekie died on 24 February 1921 at Winnipegosis, Man.
