Garvock, William Barron

GARVOCK, William Barron (1860-1918) was born in Aberdeen, Scotland and was brought to Canada by his family before 1875. He was educated at the local school in New Edinburgh, Ottawa, and later worked as a draftsman and foreman of the hardwood department for the W.E. Edwards Co. at their mills at the Rideau Falls. Garvock had no formal training as architect, but his activity as a trustee for the Ottawa School Board (1901-05) made him a logical choice to serve a Building Superintendent for the Board, and later as the Architect & Superintendent of School Buildings. From 1905 until 1918 he was responsible for the design and construction of all new public schools in the city of Ottawa, as well as the design of additions to exisiting public schools there. Garvock died in Ottawa on 3 December 1918 (obit. Ottawa Journal, 3 Dec. 1918, 5; Ottawa Citizen, 3 Dec. 1918, 6; biog. and port. Evening Journal [Ottawa], 11 March 1903, 4; and 16 Jan. 1904, 11; and 29 Oct. 1904, 11; Editorial in support of Garvock, 4 Feb. 1905, 4; and 18 April 1914, 24)
