Munro, Thomas

MUNRO, Thomas (fl. 1852-1865) described himself as 'architect of Toronto' when he submitted two entries in the competition for the Brock Monument, QUEENSTON, ONT. In 1852 (OA, MU 296, Brock Monument Papers). In his correspondence he stated he had '...been only a few days in this country', and likely arrived in Canada in July 1852 from England or the United States. His first design, to cost £ 4600, was for 'a Corinthian column on a pedestal' rising 137 ft. His second design, to cost £ 5650, was for a similar column mounted on a square base. Neither proposal was accepted, and the commission was awarded to William Thomas. He may be the same 'Thomas Munro, draftsman' listed with the Dept. of Public Works in Ottawa in 1864-66 (Mitchell's Canada Classified Directory, 1865-66, 738).
