Morris, Frank

MORRIS, Frank (1887- c. 1930) was active in Edmonton, Alta., at first under his own name from 1911, and in partnership with M.D. Morris (perhaps a brother?) in 1913-14. Born in Wales, he attended Depthew College and trained with Frederick D. Ward, architect of Welshpool, England (in 1904-07), and with F.H. Shayler, FRIBA, in Shrewsbury, England (in 1907-08). He emigrated to Canada in early 1909 and settled in Edmonton where he obtained a position with A.M. Calderon (in 1909-10). In his membership application to the Alberta Assoc. of Architects submitted in Sept. 1928, he claimed to have been the designer of 'over 200 other buildings in the Province', in addition to those which he listed in his submission, but no tender calls, contract documents or architectural drawings have yet been found which link his name to specific projects.
In 1926 he joined the federal Dept. of Public Works as the local site architect and representative of their Department in Edmonton, Alberta, and he is credited with the design of two projects for that agency including the Post Office, VEGREVILLE, ALTA. (1929-30), and Post Office in CAMROSE, ALTA. (1930-31). His name is absent from directories after 1930 (inf. Alberta Assoc. of Architects; inf. Rhona Goodspeed, Parks Canada, Ottawa).
