LONG, John Zell (1848-1921), active in St. Thomas, Ont. from c. 1881, at first under his own name, and after 1895 as J.Z. Long & Son, Architects, in partnership with his son David Long. Born in Tillsonburg, Ont. on 8 May 1848, he learned the trade of carpentry and became a building contractor. He began to advertise himself as an architect in 1881, and was one of the founding members of the Ontario Association of Architects in 1891. In 1898 he was one of fourteen competitors from the United States and Canada to submit an entry in the competition for the design of a new City Hall in St. Thomas, and for his effort he received Second Prize (C.R., ix, 11 May 1898, 2). The winner was his business rival Neil Darrach, the leading architect of St. Thomas from 1880 until 1920. Long left Canada in November 1899 and moved to Idaho; by 1901 he had relocated to Seattle, Washington to continue his career. By 1913 he had moved back to Canada where he was listed as "architect of Port Coquitlam, B.C." and was credited with the design of public school there. Long died in Seattle on 3 December 1921 (obit.
