Monette, Antoine

MONETTE, Antoine (1899-1974), son of Georges A. Monette, was born in Montreal, Que. on 20 April 1899 and attended classes at the Ecole Polytechnique at the Univ. of Montreal from 1917 to 1921. He worked in the office of Ross & Macdonald (1921-23), then moved to Paris, France and enrolled at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in 1923, and later received his diploma in architecture in November 1929. While there he spent his summers working for L.J. Madeline, a leading urban planner and architect. After returning to Montreal in December 1929 he joined his father’s office and remained with him for the next decade before opening an office in partnership with Marcel Parizeau in late 1940. Monette then served with the Canadian Army during WWII and returned to Canada in early 1946, but resigned from the P.Q.A.A. in 1948 and moved to France where he became a staff member of the Canadian Embassy in Paris and served as architect-in-residence for the design and construction of the embassy building in Paris. He later supervised the extensive renovations of the Canadian Embassy in The Hague in The Netherlands (1952-57). Monette resigned from the O.A.A. in 1971 and died in Montreal on 5 September 1974 (death notice Gazette [Montreal], 6 Sept. 1974, 34; inf. Province of Quebec Assoc. of Architects; inf.
