Mitchell, William

MITCHELL, William (1775-1845), a native of Cromwell, England, active in Saint John N.B. where he assisted John Cunningham with the design and construction of Centenary Wesleyan Methodist Church, Saint John, N.B., 1838-39. According to church records '...the specification of the church was made by Mr. Mitchell, architect, and the plan was by Mr. Cunningham, architect' (G.A Henderson, Early Saint John Methodism, 1890, 47). After his death on 16 September 1845 he was noted as having been '..for a long period an architect in this city' (death notice Saint John Morning News, 17 Sept. 1845, 2; The Courier [Saint John], 20 Sept. 1845, 2). His last known work was for the preparation of the plans, in the Gothic style, for Brussels Street Baptist Church, SAINT JOHN, N.B., completed after his death in 1846-47 (M.A. Golding & P.Prebble, Brief History of Brussels Street United Baptist Church, 1950, 3, illus.)
