Mitchell, George A.

MITCHELL, George A. (fl. 1896-98) was the designer of a substantial Music Hall for the Loyal Orange Order, Second Street at Chipman Street, RAT PORTAGE [now Kenora], ONT. in 1896-97 (C.A.B., x, May 1897, 104; Rat Portage Miner, 23 Oct. 1897, 5). The building opened October 1897, but was destroyed by fire on 19 May 1898. A perspective view of the building, signed by Mitchell, appeared the following day (Rat Portage Miner, 20 May 1898, 1, illus.). Mitchell supervised the reconstruction of the building, renamed The Hilliard Opera House, which reopened later that year (Rat Portage Miner, 11 Nov. 1898, 8). No biographical information on Mitchell has been found.
