Minue, William Edgar

MINUE, William Edgar (1862 - 1939) was active in York County, New Brunswick. Born in that province on 2 July 1862, he was residing in St. Mary's, N.B. in 1884 when he was recorded to have married Martha Jane Soles on 3 April 1884. In 1901 he was still living and working in St. Mary's, and had already begun his career as an architect there as early as 1899. By 1903 he was listed as an architect residing in nearby Gibson, N.B. (New Brunswick Directory, 1903, 343). The quality of his architectural designs varies widely, from the dull and bleak St. Mary's Department Store, Frederiction (1904), to the magnificent mansion for James McMurray, also in Fredericton (1908), a veritable symphony in the Queen Anne style, and one of most important residential landmarks in the city. Both of these works are now designated heritage properties. He appears to have opened an office in Fredericton after 1900, and maintained his practise there until at least 1918 and beyond (City of Fredericton Directory, 1918, 99). Minue joined the New Brunswick Association of Architects, but retired from that organization in 1933, and his name last appears on provincial Voter's Lists as a "carpenter" residing at Kent Junction, N.B., located north of Moncton. He died at Kent Junction on 27 February 1939 and was later buried at Fredericton Rural Cemetery.
