Jordan, Lewis Henry

JORDAN, Lewis Henry (1866-1939) was active in Winnipeg, Manitoba where he practised continuously in partnership with Walter P. Over from 1910 until late 1925. Born in New York on 10 August 1866, he may have been trained in Chicago. The Chicago City Directory of 1887 records his name as architect, working from an office on Monroe Street (Chicago Directory, 1887, 824). He moved to Canada in 1904 or 1905, and he was appointed as local Manager for the Winnipeg branch office of Darling & Pearson (Winnipeg City Directory, 1906, 596). He held that position until 1909, and the following year he formed a partnership with W.P. Over. In 1917 he was elected President of the Manitoba Association of Architects, and in 1922 he was nominated as President of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada.

Jordan left Canada in early 1926 and moved back to Chicago, Illinois, then relocated to Minneapolis, Minn. where he worked as an architect from 1927 until 1937. In 1938 he was living and working in Detroit, Mich. as a staff member with the firm of Albert Kahn in Detroit, Michigan, and he was said to have assisted with the design of the Fisher Building, an important Detroit landmark. (biography and portrait in R.A.I.C. Journal, xxii, Dec. 1945, 270). Jordan died in Detroit on 30 July 1939 (State of Michigan, Dept. of Health, Death Certificate No. 254 635 for Lewis Henry Jordan, architect).
