Mercier, Henri

MERCIER, Henri (1904-1998) was active in Montreal, Que. from 1938 and maintained his own office there for more than forty years. Born in St. Martin, Laval Co., Quebec on 17 February 1904 he attended Assomption College (in 1917-25) and received his diploma in architecture at the Montreal Ecole des Beaux Arts in 1930. He trained with a number of Montreal firms including Viau & Venne, Gaston Gagnier, Felix Racicot, Perrault & Gadbois, and with Macduff & Germain until 1938, then opened an office under his own name. He was a respected member of his profession, and was elected by his colleagues to serve as President of the P.Q.A.A. in 1956, and again in 1960. Few references to his early work before 1950 have been found, but he is credited with a number of ecclesiastical, institutional and residential works in western Quebec and the Eastern Townships after 1950.
