Williams, William

WILLIAMS, William (1836-1918) was active in St. Marys, Ont. from c. 1880 to 1890 and was credited with introducing the Italianate style to the Perth County region. Born in London, England in 1836, he emigrated to Canada in 1869 but no information can be found on his early education or training either in England or in Ontario. By 1880 he was residing in St. Marys, near London, Ont. where he is noted as 'the architect' of several distinctive commercial and residential buildings there. After 1890 he relocated to Toronto and appears to have abandoned the profession. Williams died there on 21 June 1918 (death notice Daily Mail & Empire [Toronto], 22 June 1918; obit St. Marys Journal, 27 June 1918; inf. Larry R. Pfaff, Toronto)
