Menzies, Allan

MENZIES, Allan (1887-1983), was born in Forres, Scotland on 15 April 1887 and articled for five years with the firm of Ross & MacBeth, Architects of Inverness (in 1904-09). He emigrated to Canada in 1910 and settled in Vancouver, B.C. where he was employed as a draftsman for various offices there and studied architecture and construction at night school. He opened an office under his own name in March 1915 but joined the Canadian Artillery in 1916 and spent two years in France during WW1. After returning to Vancouver he worked briefly for William F. Jones (in 1919-20) and then re-opened his office in 1921, completing commissions for factories, schools and housing. He resigned from the AIBC in 1973, and later died in Vancouver on 26 May 1983 (biog. R. Liscombe, The New Spirit: Modern Architecture in Vancouver 1938-1963, 1997, 203-04; inf.
