Miller, William John

MILLER, William John (1889-1960), son of George M. Miller, a prominent Toronto architect from 1888 until after 1920. William J. was born in Toronto on 6 September 1889 and attended Jarvis Collegiate, but he appears to have received no formal education in architecture, choosing instead to train under his father from 1908. He continued to assist in his father's office until 1922, and eventually succeeded his father as owner and chief designer in the firm. His works include commercial, residential and ecclesiastical buildings, and after the death of his father in 1933 he continued to practise until after WWII. His modernist design for the Stainton & Evis Office Block on Adelaide Street West can almost certainly be attributed solely to him. A number of his architectural plans survive and are now held in Miller Collection, Fisher Rare Book Library, Univ. of Toronto. Miller died in Toronto on 29 August 1960 (death notice Globe & Mail [Toronto], 30 Aug. 1960, 27; inf. Ontario Assoc. of Architects).
