Quartermain, Arthur Ivatts

QUARTERMAIN, Arthur Ivatts (1874-1955) was active in Kenora, Ont. (in 1908-10), and in Windsor, Ont. (in 1918-26) but no information on his designs there has been located. Born in Wimbledon, Co. Surrey, England on 28 March 1874 he trained under his father Henry G. Quartermain, and attended classes at the Architectural Association in London. He served as Hon. Treasurer and Vice-President of the Society of Architects, London, in 1904, and appears to have emigrated to Canada in 1906 or 1907. He joined the Ontario Assoc. of Architects in November 1908, and then moved to Rock Island, Illinois in 1915 before relocating to Windsor, Ont. in 1918 and remaining there until 1926. In 1919 he was listed as a staff architect for the Trussed Concrete Steel Co. of Canada (City of Windsor Directory, 1919-20, 421), and he later had his own office in Windsor where he specialized in the design of private residences and small factories. By June 1928 Quartermain had moved to Toronto where he joined the office of Sproatt & Rolph, and was active there until 1936 when his OAA membership lapsed (inf. Ontario Association of Architects). He later died in Toronto on 17 July 1955 (inf. Mike Strange, England)
