Norgate, Thomas B.

NORGATE, Thomas Burroughes (1863 - 1906) was born in Shirehampton, near Bristol, England and arrived in Victoria, B.C. before 1889. In 1890 his name appears variously as a draftsman, and as an architect (British Columbia, Sessional Papers, 1890, Voters List, 512). The following year he was listed as 'Architect & Engineer' (R.T. Williams, British Columbia Directory, 1891, 370). Few references to his work have been found, but he appears to have been familiar with fashionable trends in architectural design, and his plans for a residence for Thomas Futcher were described as being styled "...in the new Gothique a-la Japonaise style" (Daily Colonist [Victoria], 2 May 1890, 8). No information on his architectural activity has been found after 1892, and his name last appears in the provincial directory in 1895 (biog. D. Luxton, Building The West: The Early Architects of British Columbia, 2003, 180, 513). Norgate later returned to England and died at Shirehampton, Co. Bristol on 16 March 1906.
