Walker, Charles H.

WALKER, Charles H. (1855 - 1927), active in Winnipeg, Man. as a draftsman and later as business partner with Samuel Hooper in 1905-08 (see list of works under Hooper & Walker). Born in Ontario on 12 March 1855 he arrived in Manitoba in October 1879 and likely trained under Hooper, later assisting him as chief draftsman. In 1904 Walker was credited with the design of the Kelly-Maw Block, a large six storey warehouse on Bannatyne Avenue East, WINNIPEG, MAN. (Free Press [Winnipeg], 24 Nov. 1904, 19). When Hooper was appointed Provincial Architect for Manitoba in October 1904, Walker continued to attend to the day-to-day affairs of Hooper's practice, and was appointed a full partner in the new firm of Hooper & Walker in early 1905.

After the death of Hooper in October 1911, Walker left Manitoba and moved to Victoria, B.C. where he 'continued to practice his profession' (Pacific Coast Architect [San Francisco], ii, Feb. 1912, 234). There he designed a Craftsman style bungalow for William Dunford, Trutch Street, VICTORIA, B.C., 1912 (Victoria Heritage Foundation, This Old House: Victoria's Heritage Neighbourhoods, Vol. 4, 2009, 126-7, illus. & descrip.). Walker died in Victoria on 12 January 1927 (obit. Victoria Daily Times, 13 Jan. 1927, 9).
