Jones, Francis Lionel

JONES, Francis Lionel (1866 - 1953) was born at Brisbane, Australia where he claims to have had "....twenty years experience, and is associated with the Royal Institute of British Architects". He was living and working in London, England from February 1886 to March 1889 when he was accepted as an Associate Member of the Royal Inst. of British Architects, and he continued to work there until after 1900.

He emigrated to Canada in 1902 and spent four years in Winnipeg as an assistant to Henry S. Griffith and to John Woodman. It is likely that he met Richard G. Bunyard in Winnipeg, where the latter was also working as a draftsman. Jones moved to Moose Jaw, Sask. in early 1906 and opened an office there (Moose Jaw Times, 13 March 1906, 5). The following week a partnership announcement for Jones & Bunyard appeared, and the firm began to take on a variety of commercial and residential commissions there. The office remained active until May of 1908 when Jones left Canada and took up residence in Stockton, near San Francisco, California. He later returned to Brisbane and continued to practise there, and in 1930 he became a lecturer at Central Technical College, the forerunner of the present Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane. Jones died there on 14 November 1953 (biog. in R.I.B.A., London., Directory of British Architects 1834-1914, 2001, Vol. 1, p. 1035)
