Leybourne, Malcolm

LEYBOURNE, Malcolm (1885-1964) was active in Windsor, Ont. where he formed a partnership with R.J. Whitney as 'Architects & Engineers' in May 1912 (The Brickbuilder [New York], xxi, June 1912, 171, partnership announcement). Born at Sunderland, Co. Durham on 5 July 1885, he was recorded as an apprentice architect in South Shields, Co. Durham, England where he was a pupil of J.W. MacDonald (Journal of the Royal Inst. of British Architects [London], xi, 25 July 1903, 479, list of students for RIBA examinations). Leybourne was reputedly 'a graduate of Michigan University' and claimed full membership in the Royal Institute of British Architects, but this cannot be substantiated in the Membership records held by the R.I.B.A. in London, England. The firm of Leybourne & Whitney was credited with a variety of buildings in Windsor and in neighbouring Walkerville, Ont., including residential, commercial and ecclesiastical projects, many of which still stand today. In 1913 their firm prepared a design for a new Windsor Police Station, to be erected near City Hall (Evening Record [Windsor], 19 Feb. 1913, 1, illus. & descrip.), but the scheme was never built. A few months earlier, in September 1912, the firm of Leybourne & Whitney were one of 39 architects from across Canada who submitted plans in the national competition for the Winnipeg City Hall, but they were not among the five finalists (Evening Record [Windsor], 11 Sept. 1912, 7; 6 Feb. 1913, 2; City of Winnipeg Archives, Council Communications, 1913, Box A169, Item 9741, list of entrants). The winners were Clemesha & Portnall of Regina, but their scheme was never built.

In 1915 he formed another partnership with John Selby Sewell (1892-1968), but their partnership was dissolved in 1917, and Leybourne took over the practise (Const., x, May 1917, 168). No information has been found on Leybourne in Canada after 1918, but he is almost certainly the same "Malcolm Leybourne, architect" who moved to Dayton, Ohio where he joined the office of Schenck & Williams, Architects, and later opened an office under his own name. He was recorded in the 1930 U.S.A. Census as living and working in the town of Monroe, Miami County, Ohio. Leybourne died in Massachusetts on 26 July 1964 and was later buried at Maple Cemetery in Tippecanoe City, Miami County, Ohio. (biog. in Walkerville Ontario - 1913 -, Including Windsor, Ford, Sandwich & Ojibway, 86; inf. Andrew Foot, Windsor).

COMPETITIONS

WINDSOR, ONT., Masonic Temple, 1915. It appears that 4 local architects were invited to submit a design for the new Masonic Temple on Ouellette Avenue, but the submission by Leybourne & Sewell was set aside and J.C. Pennington was awarded the commission (Evening Record [Windsor], 3 June 1915, 2). The winning scheme was not built until 1921, by Pennington & Boyde, Architects)
