Porter, John Stormont

PORTER, John Stormont (1891-1955) was born in Edinburgh, Scotland on 2 April 1891, studied architecture at the Edinburgh College of Art, and articled with James G. Fairley, a prominent architect in Scotland. Porter emigrated to Canada in 1912 and settled in Winnipeg, taking a position as draftsman in the office of the Provincial Architect for the Manitoba Dept. of Public Works. He enlisted in November 1915 and served overseas with Canadian Engineers, but was wounded at Ypres and returned to Winnipeg in 1919. He moved to Vancouver in 1920 and in 1924 joined the firm of McCarter & Nairne, remaining with them for the next 30 years and assisting with several major works including the Marine Building (1929-30) and the Seaforth Highlanders Armoury (1934-35). He served as President of the Architectural Inst. of British Columbia in 1947-48. Porter died in Vancouver on 12 February 1955 (obituary Vancouver Sun, 14 Feb. 1955, 2; obit., R.A.I.C.
