Porte, Frederick Stewart

PORTE, Frederick Stewart (1887-1944) of Toronto, Ont. was born there on 15 August 1887 and educated in Owen Sound. He trained with G.M. Miller (in 1909) and with Symons & Rae (in 1910-11) in Toronto, then returned to Owen Sound where he was partner in the firm of Porte & Young in 1911-12. From 1922 until early 1930 Porte worked as a designer and draftsman for some of the leading firms in Cleveland, including W.G. Caldwell, J.H. McDowell, for Bloodgood Tuttle, and for Fulton & Taylor. After returning to Toronto he worked briefly for Craig & Madill, and for Victor L Morgan, then opened an office in 1932 and designed several substantial private houses in a distinctive Tudor Revival style. After 1940 he joined de Havilland Aircraft Co. as a designer and draftsman. Porte died in Toronto on 25 November 1944 (obit.
