WELLS, Dalton Russell (1878-1951), partner in the Detroit firm of Burrowes & Wells (active 1910-15). Born in Whitstone, N.Y. on 22 June 1878, he was educated there and trained in Michigan with Smith, Hinchman & Grylls, a leading firm in Detroit. In 1910 he formed a partnership with Marcus Burrowes, and was most active in the construction and building supervision activities of the firm, allowing Burrowes to contribute his considerable talents to designing buildings in Detroit and in Windsor (see list of works under Burrowes & Wells). Their most significant commission in Canada was the palatial Tudor Revival mansion for Hiram Walker, WALKERVILLE, ONT., 1912-14. After the dissolution of the firm in 1914 Wells returned to his area of special interest in construction and engineering, and was a staff member of Stran-Steel Corp, with Shreve, Anderson & Walker, and at the time of his death he was working in the architectural division of General Motors Corp. Wells died in Detroit on 9 March 1951 (obit. Michigan Society of Architects Monthly Bulletin, xxv, July 1951, 3).
