O'Dell, Henry Augustus

O'DELL, Henry Augustus (1875-1965), active in Detroit, Michigan and partner with Frank G. Baxter (Baxter & O'Dell 1904-10), and as Baxter, O'Dell & Halpin (1911-15). In 1928 he formed a cross-border partnership with the Windsor architect John E. Trace, and with another Detroit architect George F. Diehl (1892-1976), but their firm was dissolved in 1931. In Detroit, the firm of Baxter, O'Dell & Halpin is best know for the striking T.B. Rayl Hardware Co., Woodward Avenue at Grand River Avenue, DETROIT., MICH., 1915, a highly ornamented commercial block owing much to the work of Louis Sullivan (W. Hawkins Ferry, The Buildings of Detroit, 1968, 185, plate 210, illus.). O'Dell was born in Detroit on 17 April 1875 and devoted much of his career to practising architecture in his native city. He died in Detroit on 2 February 1965 (obituary Detroit Free Press, 4 Feb. 1965, 36).
