Hodges, Samuel Grose

HODGES, Samuel Grose (1844 - c. 1883) was born in England and was active in Toronto, Ont. where his name appears in the City of Toronto Directory in 1872 through 1875. In January 1874 he was one of six architects invited to submit plans in the competition for All Saints Anglican Church, Sherbourne Street, TORONTO, ONT. (Anglican Church Archives, Toronto, All Saints Anglican Church, Minutes of the Vestry, January-February 1874). The design by Hodges was not selected, and was set aside in favour of the winning scheme by R.C. Windeyer. He is almost certainly the same 'S.G. Hodges, Architect' who appears in Sarnia in early 1880 (Sarnia Observer, 9 Jan. 1880, 5, advert.). There, he competed against George Waddell for the commission to rebuild and enlarge St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Sarnia, 1880-81. No information can be found on Hodges after 1883.
