Phillip, Hardie

PHILLIP, Hardie (1886-1973), a prominent American architect and an exponent of the modern Gothic style, collaborated with W.L. Somerville on substantial alterations to Timothy Eaton Memorial Church, St. Clair Avenue West, TORONTO, ONT. in 1938 (R.A.I.C. Journal, xvi, Feb. 1939, 38; W. Dendy & W. Kilbourn, Toronto Observed, 1986, 190-91, illus. & descrip.). His work there included a new chancel and major alterations to the sanctuary. Phillip is best known for his design of the Church of the Heavenly Rest in New York City, 1929 (A.I.A. Guide to New York City, 3rd Edit., 1988, 384, illus.). He also designed several buildings on the campus of the California Institute of Technology, and at the University of Hawaii. Phillip died at Laguna Hills, Calif. on 10 October 1973 (obit.
