Haynes, Joseph

HAYNES, Joseph (1856-1927), was born in rural Quebec on 19 March 1856 and was active in Montreal as an architect, engineer and Professor of Civil Engineering at the Ecole Polytechnique from 1883 until 1888 when he joined in a partnership with George de G. Languedoc under the name of Languedoc & Haynes, Engineers & Architects. Their collaboration was brief, and ended in 1890. Haynes joined the Province of Quebec Association of Architects and continued to practice as an architect and engineer until after 1900. His teaching post at the Ecole Polytechnique made him the favoured choice to design major additions to that building in 1898 and in 1906. He continued to work as a civil engineer in Montreal until 1927 (Canada, 1901 Census, Montreal City No. 177, Saint Louis Ward, b-12, 5). Haynes died in Montreal on 2 June 1927 (port. and death notice, Montreal Daily Star, 4 June 1927, 3)
